Let's Talk About Dog Training
badYou know how much I loooooove to go to the dog park and play with all of the other dogs? Thiiiiiiisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss much! But today I didn't have such a good time and I want to tell you a little about it.
Everything started out fine. There were two small dogs in this amazing dog park in Rockport, Texas. It is a huge park and I can run and run and run. Oh and chase squirrels. There is a large chain link fence so mom and dad don't have to worry about me getting out and running into trouble. Did I mention the squirrels? Anyway, I sniffed around the two little dogs, but they didn't want to run, so I left them and explored the dog park. I didn't see the bad people bring their big male lab in though the gate because I was - squirrel. The big dog, his name was Rocky, decided to run and that looked like fun, so we ran around the park a couple of times, but then Rocky changed. He got pushy and kept knocking me over and then he tried to bite me. I was quick and scooted away, but he wasn't playing anymore - he was mad. His people saw him beating up on me and just let him do it. Mom and dad rushed to help me and told the people to call off their dog because he was hurting me. Finally they called out to him, but he didn't pay any attention. He was just wild. My brave hero - my dad, grabbed him by the tail and pulled him off of me and mom quickly got my leash. Dad was really mad at the people and told them if their dog wasn't trained, he shouldn't be off the leash. When we got home, mom gave me a bath and found a couple of puncture wounds on my shoulder and my ear has a little chunk out of it. I wanted mom to post pictures, but she said no. So instead, I'm having mom post an article on Dog Training Basics that everyone should read. I don't blame Rocky. He just didn't know any better and his parents did not take the time to let him know how to behave. Please don't be like them. Love, Schatzi Basics of Dog Training
It's essential for Dog parents like you to know certain basic factors that determine your relationship with your Dog and can go a long way in training him effectively. Before you begin training your Dog, it is absolutely essential that you build a loving bond with him. This is important as it helps you to understand his needs and instincts and also allows your Dog to have complete trust in you. Know more about Dog care from this free mini course Let us see how....... How To Bond With Your Dog Building a bond with your Dog is the first and the most crucial step involved in training him successfully. As soon as you bring your Dog home, you must first try to develop a caring and loving relationship with him in order to win his trust and confidence. When Dogs are secure in the knowledge that they belong to the family, they are more likely to respond better to their owners' training commands. Just like with any relationship, there must be mutual trust and respect between you and your Dog. Trust takes time to develop and respect comes from defining boundaries and treating any breach of those boundaries with firmness and fairness. Without enforceable limitations, respect can’t be developed. And when there is no respect, building a bond with your Dog is almost impossible. 4 Golden Rules To Building A Relationship With Your Dog :
Building a bond with your Dog will not only help you manage him better but will also make your Dog calm, quiet and an extremely well-adjusted pet. Love Your Dog and He Will Love You back Once you're succesful in building a bond with your Dog, you can rest assured that training him and teaching him new and clever tricks will be a cakewalk. Learn how to bond with your Dog with this free mini course. How Your Dog Learns... Your Dog's learning period can be divided into five phases: The Teaching Phase - This is the phase where you must physically demonstrate to your Dog exactly what you want him to do. The Practicing Phase - Practice makes Perfect. Once a lesson is learnt, practice with your Dog what you have just taught him. The Generalizing Phase - Here you must continue practicing with your Dog in different locations and in an environment with a few distractions. You can take your Dog out for a walk, or to a nearby park and command him to practice whatever you've taught him. Practicing the learned lessons in multiple locations and in the presence of small distractions will help him learn and retain lessons better . The Testing Phase - Once you're sure that your Dog has achieved almost 90% success....he responds correctly almost every time you give a command, you must start testing his accuracy in newer locations with a lot of distractions. Example: Take him to the local shopping mall and ask him to obey your command. He may not come up with the correct response the very first time you do this, but you must not lose hope. The idea is to test your Dog to see how he responds in an environment which is new to him. Set-up a situation where you are in control of the environment and your Dog. There are only 2 possibilities:
Keep on testing until he succeeds. Follow the rule of the 3 Ps – patience, persistence, praise. Internalizing Phase - Finally, comes the extremely rewarding phase where your Dog does everything he is taught to do even without your commands. Remember:

Let's just state the obvious. I have plenty of hair to keep my entire body warm. I have no need for clothes. I understand that you do - you look so funny without them! I just don't understand your obsession with dressing me in people clothes. Frankly it's embarrassing. Would you do a little research and find out if this is a new phenomenon? People dressing dogs? Who started all of this? Love and lots of kisses, Schatzi Dear Schatzi,
Well, I did a little research and I'm going to be betting you won't like the answer. Evidently humans have been hanging things about canine bodies for, well, ever since you decided to lie down by our nice warm fires. .DNA evidence, my dear Schatzi, affirms that dogs share a common ancestry from Asia and about 20,000 years ago, dogs and humans became friends and partners. The first things we hung on your bodies were collars, of course, There are still preserved leather and gold collars, from Egypt and a collar on the Pompeii dog that tells of his heroism. There were jewel collars and spiked collars, Japanese dogs of wealthy Samurai had their own matching suits of armor. In Europe, royalty adorned their dogs with coats and furs, jewels and precious metals King Louis XI's King Cavalier Spaniel had a red velvet collar studded with rubies and pearls.. I'm not exactly sure when the costumes began, but it is a more recent event - probably fostered by advertising agencies. You look very cute in this Reindeer outfit - even though it took three of us to hold you down to dress you. I understand the embarrassment though, because my mother once bought me a full wool coat the was checkered bright yellow, red, blue and green. It was so expensive that I was forced to wear it all winter even though I felt it was hideous. So, Schatzi, I will promise you, that you can be naked from now on except for a safety collar, because you are beautiful just the way you are. Mom has been taking pictures and having fun with the editing program on her new iPhone. I am quite a bit bigger (like 20 lbs bigger) than the last photos you saw me in, so I thought I get her to post some. You can see that I am quite the model since I've been doing it since I was a baby. Right now we are in a town called Show Low.. It is in the White Mountains of Arizona and boy am I ever glad! Most of the state has weather in the triple digits and here the weather is perfect. Here is the RV Park Where We Are Today
Last night my older brother, Mr. Buddy, passed away. Mom said he was 19 human years old and that made him very, very old in dog years.
I am so very lonely. I have been wandering around the house and sitting on mom's lap. I miss Mr Bud. He was sort of crabby to me, but every morning I would give him a million kisses until he woke up. When he passed away mom let me give him one last kiss goodbye. Mom said there is a place where her animals go when they die. It is headed up by her first cat, Danger. Danger will take care of Mr. Bud until mom goes to be with them all. Mom says we will all be together again someday and that I must not be sad now. So goodbye Buddy - I will be giving you morning kisses again someday. Lyrics By Dr Hook
"But the thrill we've never known
Is the thrill that'll getcha When you get your picture On the cover of the Rolling Stone.Rolling Stone... Wanna see my picture on the cover. Stone... Wanna buy five copies for my Mother. Stone... Wanna see my smiling face On the cover of the Rolling Stone" Magazine Covers
Recently mom posted a photo of me on the cover of Vogue People loved the photo and several have asked her how she did it. So I'm going to let her do the blog today and she will show you how to get YOUR photo on a magazine!
Turn Your Photos into Fake Magazine Covers
Hi!
I love taking photos and I love taking photos of the dogs! But just how many dog pics can you have without them all looking alike? Lately, I've started tweaking and editing some of my photos with fun apps on my iPhone. Yes, I said iPhone. I have a super duper fancy camera...but most of my photos are taken and edited on my iPhone. The picture quality is excellent and I always have my phone with me to take those candid shots when they crop up. Which Photo App?
I use a fun photo app called PhotoLab to edit my photos and add some amazing effects. I can save my photos as a charcoal sketch, an oil painting, or even a cartoon. But right now, I'll show you how easy it is to make a FAKE MAGAZINE COVER.
The StepsThis is the original photo I used for the magazine cover above. Try to use a close-up photo with the subject in the center. 1. Open the PhotoLab app
2. Select the Category You Want - In this case it is Magazine Covers.
2. Upload your photo to the app by clicking on a photo icon.
3. Select your fake magazine cover and click the green check mark. 4. That's it! Your cover is processing and in less than a minute your cover is available. What's Next?
Now your cover is available to download to your iPhone gallery, or upload to social media!
What If You Don't Have An iPhone?
Don't worry, if you don't have an iPhone there is a photolab app for android
You can also create a cover online from your computer You can google to get hundreds of sites. Here is a link to one called Magazine Yourself. If you want to change titles. add dates or personalize text you can use Enjoypic.com You can select from titles like Vogue, TIME, More, Make Up and many others. Just choose a cover you like and upload the image that you’d like. After that, you may need to drag, resize, or crop the image to fit the magazine cover and typography. All Done!
The point of all of this is to have fun! Make funny pictures, send them to friends and family - or better yet, make them OF friends and family. It's easy! Feel free to post your cover in the comments section. I look forward to seeing what you create.

Everyone thinks their gorgeous new puppy belongs on the cover of VOGUE!
Of course with a few photo apps, it can happen...at least for your own enjoyment. But how do you get that puppy to pose sweetly for a photo when all it wants to do is wiggle and roll and bite and chew and pee? So Grab Your Camera - Here are 5 Tips that my mom uses for Picture Perfect Puppy Photos...(Say that 3 times fast). 1. A Good Puppy Is A Tired Puppy
Before mom tries to take my photo we have a long play session or a walk or sometimes both. That gets me excited and tired. After our play time, mom sits with me calmly until I am relaxed and more willing to listen to her and stay where I am put.
2. Relax And Be Patient
When I'm doing something cute, mom jumps up and grabs the camera and ALWAYS misses the shot! When she prepares a setting, thinks about the shoot, positions me and just talks to me, I will do almost anything she wants. She also takes lots of photos and tosses out the bad ones. (There are bad ones)?
3. Find The Best Light
Early morning light can lend a surreal quality to a photo. But mom says any natural light is better than a flash that could scare me.
4. Use An Assistant
Sometimes Dad is behind the wall, or under the table. He holds me in position and then steps out of frame just a second before the click. I am the STAR!
5. Keep Your Camera Handy
Of course those candid photos do happen. Keep your camera ready for the unexpected.
Don't Worry, Be Snappy
Puppies don't stay little for long, so get out there and snap those photos now before they grow up ...into DOGS! Take photos from all angles. Close up. Eye level. Underwater. Think outside of the box and your photos will reflect your creativity.

Mr Fenn Buried A Treasure
Imagine my excitement when mom told me we were going to go "DIG" for buried treasure! I LOVE to dig! (Normally mom doesn't want me to dig click here to find out how she keeps me out of the flower beds).
She said than Forrest Fenn an elderly gentleman from New Mexico, hid a treasure in 2010 worth one million dollars somewhere in New Mexico and she thinks it's near Silver City!! Mr. Fenn wrote a poem with clues for how to find the treasure and hundreds of people have been looking for it and no one has found it yet. The Poem of Clues
As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold, I can keep my secret where, And hint of riches new and old. Begin it where warm waters halt And take it in the canyon down, Not far, but too far to walk. Put in below the home of Brown. From there it’s no place for the meek, The end is ever drawing nigh; There’ll be no paddle up your creek, Just heavy loads and water high. If you’ve been wise and found the blaze, Look quickly down, your quest to cease, But tarry scant with marvel gaze, Just take the chest and go in peace. So why is it that I must go And leave my trove for all to seek? The answers I already know, I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak. So hear me all and listen good, Your effort will be worth the cold. If you are brave and in the wood I give you title to the gold. ADDITION: MARCH 1st Clue: “The Treasure is hidden higher than 5000 feet above sea level.” ADDITION: MARCH 27th Clue: “No need to dig up the old outhouses, the treasure in not associated with any structure.” ADDITION: MAY 3rd Clue: “The treasure is not in a graveyard.” ADDITION: JUNE 28th Clue: “The treasure is not hidden in Idaho or Utah.” We Started Our Search At The Silver City Museum
The Silver City Museum is set in the 1881 H.B. Ailman House, an Italianate redbrick mansion right in the middle of Silver City. Mom wanted to see what the town looked like a long time ago and check on the town’s growth, including old historic photos of the severe floods that used to plague downtown and a place called the ditch - where flood waters were diverted..."no place for the meek".
Did We Find Fenn's Treasure??
Well, no. But we sure had fun digging around in the dirt and trying to solve the mystery puzzle. Mom said if we found it she would buy me all the bones I ever wanted to bury in the dirt.. so I worked really hard at it. Dad said the real treasure of Silver City was the casual atmosphere and the biggest best antique shop he'd ever seen!!
Dog Friendly Restaurant
All that digging around made us hungry and great people must own the Curious Kumquat Restaurant in Silver City, because I was welcome to sit in the outdoor part and sneak food from under the table while mom and dad had dinner....boy was it good food!
How To Get To Silver City, NM and Hunt For Treasure Too!
Silver City, New Mexico is not quite on the beaten path. But the path to Silver City, is worth the trip. Two of New Mexico’s national scenic byways pass through the region. Get there from the northeast, on the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway or from the north by The Trail of the Mountain Spirits National Scenic Byway over the Continental Divide. You can make the trip from the south on Hwy 180 and barely notice that you are climbing into the mountains, until you're already there.
Marfa TX is off the main roads through West Texas, and traveling there you see very few other people along Hwy 90. Yet, as the sun starts to dip in the western sky, cars start to roll in to the Marfa Lights Visitor Center. Calling it a "Visitor Center" is a stretch because it is just a rest area with a balcony... unless they meant visitors from another galaxy....
First, a van containing an entire family rolled in. They brought blankets ( a good idea in the cold windy evening) lawn chairs, and dinner. They set up their picnic on the viewing platform and waited for the sun to set. Next came a mid 60's gentleman. He was recording the event. He said the date and time and then, "we are investigating the lights of Marfa...." It all sounded very sci fi....
By the time we were all prepared to meet the aliens, the parking lot was full. All tourists. Each of us wanting to be the first to see the lights dancing on the desert. (The video below will explain more about the Marfa lights)
We watched and waited. Look ! Red Lights!....No they are just tail lights from a car.... White Lights!! Fooled again. We didn't see any dancing lights and later the locas told us that when it is really windy they don't show up. We had fun anyway and maybe we will see them next time we are through here.
The Next Morning....Shopping At Prada
Valentine, Texas is only a few miles west of Marfa on Hwy 90. There we found a building - all by itself... a Prada Store? We had to get out to look. I particularly liked the Prada purses in the window. They looked very chewy.
In 2005, the brainchild of Berlin-based artistic team Elmgreen and Dragset, Prada Marfa was meant to be a “pop architectural land art project.” Costing a sum total of $80,000 - about 40 Prada handbags and shoes, it is a perpetual art installation and not a store, but we couldn't resist a little window shopping. Judge Roy Bean was the self acclaimed "Law" west of the Pecos.
Judge Roy Bean was the self acclaimed "Law" west of the Pecos. He dispensed his form of justice from this place in Langtry Texas. He named the town after Lily Langtry, an opera singer that he never met, but held in deepest admiration.
Dogs aren't allowed in the museum (some people are just not enlightened about the benefits of having a dog with you 24/7). Anyway, I had to look through the window of my RV jail. But Trickster that I am, I escaped my prison and ran to smell the flowers on museum grounds....unfortunately my escape didn't last long and I was apprehended and put in solitary confinement (my kennel) while mom and dad finished the museum tour.
Judge Roy Bean: Justifiable homicide.
[Goes through the man's pockets] Judge Roy Bean: I fine this man, uh, $50 for disturbing the peace and $10 for lying around. Nick the Grub (Jackson gang: [Bean has shot Bad Bob from ambush with a buffalo rifle] Damn, Judge! You shot him in the back! Whorehouse Lucky Jim (Jackson gang: Appears like he shot him in the back and the front! Judge, you didn't give him no chance! Judge Roy Bean: He'd didn't deserve a chance. If he wanted a chance; he should have gone somewhere else. Ordinarily, I'd take you in my court and try you and hang you. But if you've got money for whiskey, I guess we can dispense with those proceedings.
Lily Langtry: [Lily notices her portrait behind the bar] Is that a bullet hole through my heart?
Tector Crites (Jackson gang: Yes it is, ma'am. They was wild men in those days. Lily Langtry: Who did it? Tector Crites (Jackson gang: Snake River Rufus Krile did that, I believe. Lily Langtry: What became of him? Tector Crites (Jackson gang: Judge shot him. Dead. Dead, dead. Then he fined him for some other crimes. And then later we hanged him. Lily Langtry: Most appropriate. |
